The Beginner

Jan 16, 2020 | Religious Trauma, Atheism, Secular Sexuality

I’ve pointed out many times, on Secular Sexuality and in life, the role that film had in opening my eyes to the pain of the queer community. From a small conservative town, it was easy to believe that I didn’t actually know any queer folks and the ones that I did had the same rights I did; i.e. marriage ‘equality’ meant that all men could marry women. The idea that people were suffering immensely because of ancient and patriarchal traditions honestly didn’t mean much of anything to me. A handful of films, notably How to Survive a Plague, Dallas Buyers Club, The Kids are Alright and many others forever opened my eyes to my own hatred and complicity. The Beginners was one such film. Christopher’ Plummer’s portrayal of a beautiful late in life coming out story, contrasted with Ewan McGregor’s more conventional but equally human struggles with love, changed who I am as a person.

With that elaborate pre-amble I am terribly excited about tonight’s Secular Sexuality, where Vi will be interviewing Frank Zindler, former president of American Atheists, esteemed counter-apologetics debater, editor of American Atheist Magazine, and Director of American Atheists Press. He’s also written multiple books, including the series Through Atheist Eyes and his newest work, out now on Amazon, Confessions of a Born-Again Atheist: The Implausible Lives of a Godless Guy.
